Value in Healthcare
vNursing Informatics Professionals are distinct, hybrid heroes of healthcare
vAdvocate for impactful Innovation
vThe Contributions and guidance improve workflows for healthcare staff and Best Practices
vEvolving Value of Nursing Informatics
Informatics nurses are distinct professionals and hybrid heroes in healthcare who advocate for impactful innovations to keep patients safe and at the focus of care provision. Their contributions and guidance lead to improved workflow for healthcare staff and allow them to develop best practices through effective management of informatics structures processes and use of technology (Kelley, 2019). Through this approach, nursing informatics has an evolving value to health care for better quality care.
History of Nursing Informatics
vData from standardized patient records
vDevelopment of standardizes languages
vAttributes for computability and semantic interoperability
vBecoming a subdivision of healthcare informatics in the 1980s Growth-spurt decade that propelled it into the current profession
From the start of modern nursing, data emanating from standardized patient records were considered as essential resources in assessing and enhancing the quality of care. Nursing informatics began to evolve in the second part of the last century but did not have a standardized language. The attributes of computability and semantic interoperability affected the realization of the specialty until 1980s when it emerged as an essential part of enhancing patient care quality. The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) was established in 1992 after the ANA recognized the specialty as a critical component of healthcare provision. The 1980s is considered as the growth-spurt decade which enabled the profession to be what it is today (Knox, 2019). The implication is that to realize the potential of nurses to transform and enhance health care and outcomes through informatics will need fundamental changes among individuals, organizations and systems.
4. Explain how organizational policy on health information systems can be affected or impacted by government regulation.5. Discuss nurse-led innovation as it relates to the advances in informatics and how informatics innovation can be used to improve the quality of patient care.6. Provide an example of the role of the nurse in transforming health care data into knowledge that can improve patient care using nursing informatics practice.

Re: Topic 5 DQ 1
Envision Healthcare has a program called evolution Health that focuses on building a better home care experience for their patients who have recently been discharged from a hospital. According to Evolution Health’s mission statement they “focus on hiring compassionate, highly experienced clinicians and empowering them with evidence-based clinical protocols, we deliver better outcomes, fewer re-hospitalizations and higher patient satisfaction” (Evolution Health, 2020). This organization prides themselves on delivering the highest care to their patients in a home care setting through collaboration from hospitals and the patients’ primary care providers. Through this collaboration, patients are able to have decreased 30-day re-admission rates among high-risk Medicare patients (Roepers et al, 2017). This innovative model affects interprofessional collaboration because all members of the team work together for the benefit of the patients. This organization has a medical command center (MCC) and a mobile integrated team (MIT) that are both available 24/7 for coordinating resources and managing the health of the patient. The ability to treat and manage patients through telemedicine can decrease the overall cost of patients’ long-term admissions and potentially re-admissions for more complex recurrent medical issues.

Hello LaShionna,
I do agree with you that the Evolution Health promotes multidisciplinary teams’ approach and collaboration among its staff, patients and home-based primary care providers. The utilization of home-based care providers in collaboration with clinicians and nurses has proved to be cost effective in terms of reduced rate of readmission hence create more space at the facility for patients who are in critical conditions and require highly specialized care. The use of MDT collaboration has reported higher success rates in the oncology departments specializing in head and neck cancers. The MDT comprises of ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), maxillofacial surgeons, medical oncologists and radiologists (Taberna et al., 2020). I do agree with you that the organizational capacity to incorporate telemedicine into its daily operations have promotes the collaboration and increased the scope of healthcare. The use of telemedicine has proved to be the best option in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic hence reduces chances of spread of the infectious diseases and also eliminates the chances of one contracting hospitalization related infections (Kichloo et al., 2020).
