According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) (2013), it is estimated that 42.1 million people in the United Statessmoke cigarettes. Research the effects smoking and secondhand smoke has on anadult’s, on a child’s, and on an unborn fetus’s respiratory system and health.
A few states have implemented laws that make it illegal tosmoke in the car when there is a child within the car. Should this become afederal law where it is enforced in all states? What about making it illegalfor a pregnant mother to smoke? Or parents smoking in a house with children,should this be illegal too? How far should lawmakers go with the creation ofanti-smoking laws for the protection of the unborn, infants and children to anindividual’s personal freedom?

Where is smoking not allowed?Smoking and using e-cigarettes are banned in the following outdoor public areas: Within 10 metres of children’s play equipment in outdoor public places. Public swimming pools. Spectator areas at sports grounds or other recreational areas used for organised sporting events.
Established through the Tobacco Products Control Act 83 of 1993, South Africa has a ban on tobacco advertisments and smoking in public places. Amended in 2008, the act increased the age of sale from 16 to 18 years old and banned tobacco sales at health and educational establishments.
Key points. Nearly one-quarter of smokers have only a few cigarettes a day, or smoke only now and then. Light and intermittent smoking, or social smoking, is better for you than heavy smoking. But it still increases the risks of heart disease, lung cancer, cataract, and a host of other conditions.
